Some of those buildings have stories that are far more dramatic than their elegant surroundings might suggest. In 1926, after Agatha Christie mysteriously disappeared and sparked a nationwide search, she was eventually discovered staying at Harrogate’s Swan Hydropathic Hotel, now the Old Swan, under an assumed name. During the Second World War, several of the town’s grand hotels were requisitioned for government use, including by the Air Ministry. After the war, as the spa trade declined, Harrogate adapted again, using those large hotels and its long tradition of hospitality to develop into one of the UK’s established conference and exhibition destinations.
